TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit, has been fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah (42:7; 50:5-9): He had been opening the eyes of the blind, loosening the ligaments of tongues, changing water into wine and he’d even been restoring the dead to life! All these signs and wonders testified to his being the anointed one of God – the Messiah. But Jesus could see that his words and actions were prompting hostility. So much so, some people were even plotting to push him over a cliff.
Then Jesus turns to his disciples to ask them what people had been saying of him. Peter confirms the truth: “Lord, you are the Christ, the Messiah, the One who saves”!
(Is that not also our profession of faith? Yes, Lord, you are my Saviour, my God! In you I trust! To you I commit my life! I love you with all my heart and I want to follow you … whatever happens!!)
But then Jesus turned to the crowds and his disciples (and us?) and says : If anyone wants to come with me – if you really want to be my disciple …“forget self, carry your cross and follow me”.
“Am I willing to do that?”
