“About this time, when the number of disciples was increasing…”
(Acts 6:1)

As members of an evolving, ever-changing, nascent community, it is worth comparing our lives here at St Mary’s with what was taking place in and from Jerusalem.

During his life and ministry on earth, the disciples had been ‘passive’ ‘listeners’.  After the resurrection they had become ‘doers’ of the Gospel, actively involving themselves in the life of the church community as well as living and administering the Good News.  Their success in doing the works of Jesus, namely, in healing, touching peoples’ lives, giving life and in restoring meaning to life, all happened because they were Spirit-filled people and the power of the Holy Spirit was operative in them and through them.

This is the challenge facing us as individuals and as a parish community:  whether or not to engage in life-giving activities.

Jesus tells us:

“I tell you most solemnly, whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, he will perform even greater works, because I am going to the Father.”
(Jn 14:12)
