SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Listening to and doing something about John the Baptist’s message

John the Baptist went through the whole of the Jordan area with an important message: “Repent!” and “Prepare a way for the Lord!”.

So, whatever we are doing or where ever we find ourselves this week, let this prayer be ever on our lips:

‘Lord, I want to prepare my life for your coming.  I repent with my whole heart for having offended you.  Come to me Lord.  Abide in me.’

With such a prayer on our lips it is right and fitting that we free ourselves of all that causes sorrow and distress, of all that weighs us down and of all that prevents us from being free and grace-filled people. (see Gal 5:16-21)

“Repent!”  “Prepare a way for the Lord!”

John says.

repentance is the all-important, necessary disposition required in order to receive the salvation and new life being freely offered to us.

How to repent?  Take a leaf out of John the Baptist’s book:  by fasting, by being a little more ascetical, by bathing ourselves in the waters of repentance, by confessing our sins. Confession is a most wonderful sacrament by which we consciously ask  the Lord to come into our lives with his forgiveness and healing love.

‘Lord, I want to prepare my life for your coming.  I repent with my whole heart for having offended you. Come to me Lord.  Abide in me.’
