FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AND LENT

Today’s readings present us with an obvious theme:  the theme of vocation or calling.  The accounts of the call of Isaiah (Is 6:1-8) and the first four of Jesus’ disciples, serve to remind us that our vocation or calling “What is my vocation?”  “How do I respond?”  are questions we might well ask ourselves. Whilst these themes will be developed during the weekend homilies, I wish to draw your attention to what the Church is asking of us in this Year of MercyBe merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful.  Let us remind ourselves of the works of mercy and try to put them into practice:

The corporal works of mercy are:

  • to feed the hungry
  • give drink to the thirsty
  • clothe the naked
  • welcome the stranger
  • visit the sick
  • visit the imprisoned
  • bury the dead

The spiritual works of mercy are:

  • instruct the ignorant
  • counsel the doubtful
  • admonish sinners
  • bear wrongs patiently
  • forgive offences
  • comfort the afflicted
  • pray for the living and the dead.
