FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AND LENT
Today’s readings present us with an obvious theme: the theme of vocation or calling. The accounts of the call of Isaiah (Is 6:1-8) and the first four of Jesus’ disciples, serve to remind us that our vocation or calling “What is my vocation?” “How do I respond?” are questions we might well ask ourselves. Whilst these themes will be developed during the weekend homilies, I wish to draw your attention to what the Church is asking of us in this Year of Mercy: Be merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful. Let us remind ourselves of the works of mercy and try to put them into practice:
The corporal works of mercy are:
- to feed the hungry
- give drink to the thirsty
- clothe the naked
- welcome the stranger
- visit the sick
- visit the imprisoned
- bury the dead
The spiritual works of mercy are:
- instruct the ignorant
- counsel the doubtful
- admonish sinners
- bear wrongs patiently
- forgive offences
- comfort the afflicted
- pray for the living and the dead.
